Honestly, I believe the lack of funding plays a huge part in the current state of academic life at 'the Dotte'. I am aware of the problems, all schools have theri own. in my huble opion a good way to help Wyandotte High School and the Other four schools in this area would be to return the top-grade students sequestered in Sumner Academy back to their home high school and stop stacking the deck academically against the rest of the students in the district who cannot compete with the high score recieved by over 300 highly intelligent student who have been taken away from their peer groups.” Posted By: parent Quality Score: 5 2006-09-19 “My son goes to school here as did I. I think that the problem with Wyandotte isn't the teachers or leadership, it's the fact that we have parents now that are just lazy and don't participate in their childs education. I have been to parent teacher conf. 3 years now and each time I was able to speak to each teacher within minutes of arriving at that class. With a student body of over 1000 you do the math. Unless parents are involved you have no right to complain. I have had dealings with a couple of different sports teams and many teachers, unless us parents get off our butts and make our children accountable don't complain about there education.” Posted By: parent Quality Score: 4 2005-11-15 “Wyandotte High School is definately headed in the right direction. You see a strong dedication from teachers at this institution. With that, comes a dedication from students to apply themselves in their class work. You also have a very strong dedication from those that coach the different extracurricular activities. They are trying to instill in athletes, that sports and education go hand in hand. In sports, but most importantly school work, you have to show dedication, vision and maturity. I am very dissapointed in parent involvement. Parents have to realize that the support they give their children does not end when they reach the school doors, it should also carry over into the building. I hear lots of complaints from parents on what the school does and does not do...and it's usually from parents that spend little to no time at the school or events.” Posted By: teacher Quality Score: 5 2005-11-04 “This is a wonderful school with teachers who truly care about students. Since the implementation of First Things First and the creation of the Small Learning Communities, Wyandotte High has improved both reading and math scores... and they continue to rise. In my visits to Wyandotte, I have witnessed teachers who have open, yet professional relationships with students. The class work is vigorous and many students plan on attending college. Regarding discipline, it is true that strict policies are enforced, but that is due to the fact that the principal and teachers have high expectations of students. It's a shame that anyone has time to type a negative comment about Wyandotte. It's a shame that sports is pushed onto these kids while they sink further behind the curb of life. If your kid(s) are looking for a fighting chance in life, then this IS NOT the stop for you. Keep driving. Another district 500 disater. While the reading & math percentage is extremely low the sense of fashion and hair will rank right up there. No focus on future. The educators all had good intentions, but the learning environment is askewed. If you are a parent or a potential student, look foward to sharing textbooks, constant interruptions from miscreant students, and temperature that doesn't stay the same. Depending on the small learning community you join, look foward to an endless amount of pointless time consumption at this H.S. Also, the bathrooms will be locked all the time due to people smoking in them. In my opinion this highschool should be shutdown. Props to all the teachers who came to teach. They truthfully have a group of educators there that are very interested in the students..and not just for paychecks. You also have to give a round of applause to their prinicipal, Walt Thompson, for doing a good job with the school.”
