Posted By: student Quality Score: 5 2008-10-16 “I graduated in 2008 with the IB diploma. I feel that North Kansas City has done an excellent job preparing me for college. I have heard about just as many fights at Northtown as any other school north of the river. The teachers won't force your kid to learn, but if they try they will receive a good education. If a student doesn't want to learn, I don't hold the school accountable for that. It's just as easy to slide through at any other school, but if one is willing to push themselves they can get the best education in the area, if you ask me.” Posted By: parent Quality Score: 5 2008-09-21 “My daughter is in the IB program at NKCHS and gets mostly A's. She partiticipates in: orchestra, drama, renaissance committee, robotics, science olymiad, technology student assoc., spanish club, debate workshop, and democrat club. She is thriving in this environment and would not wish to go elsewhere. When asked, she tells me that neither peer pressure nor gangs are an issue. I am proud to send my student to a school with much ethnic diversity. I feel that this school is enabling my daughter in becoming a very well rounded individual.” Posted By: parent Quality Score: 2 2008-01-18 “I am a 1979 Graduate of NKCHS, and practically my entire immediate family graduated from this school, so I was excited when my Son had the same opportunity. However it became apperent over time that this school was not the same school that my family or I had attended. During that time, This was one of the best schools in the area. I even had many of the same instructors that my parents had. Now, it has degraded to a school that I would not recommend sending any child to. During my Son's attendence, he was witness to many fights. While he had a few good Teachers, many were 'rookies', just coming out of 2 yrs or less of previous experience NKCHS has lots of potential, but lots of work to do.” Posted By: student Quality Score: 5 2007-10-24 “I am an IB student at NKCHS, which offers some of the most intellectual and helpful teachers available; the teachers here are mostly amazing. In reference to what the previous parent said about violence there was ONLY 1 violence/weapon offense in 2006. I feel just as safe here as I did in middle school. The IB is an internationally recognized diploma and the best diploma you can get. if you hang out with the right people you encounter NO pressure at all. every teacher I've had has offered afterschool help if you needed it and care about how youdo. The dropout is much lower than I would have expected for it and is about like other high schools. My child is in the so-called IB program for gifted children. This school is more of a hassle than it is a help. Before we moved here, my child was an A and B+ student. Now, he has resorted to violence from the pressure of the other kids going there. The teachers and principal do not show any concern for that of the students. When a child is showing signs of need for help, the teachers disregard and ignore it. Furthermore, I am appalled at the number of students who have failed or were recent high school drop-outs. One can walk down the hall between classes and hear 4-5 different languages going at once. Our kids just completed their sophomore year at NKCHS and the environment has been rewarding. The teacher/student interaction is free-flowing. There is a myriad of activities, clubs, and sports in which to expand your horizons. Our kids have selected the Gold Medallion diploma as their goal. This challenging mix of regular and college prep level classes will set the bar well for their young adulthood. Northtown community spirit is high. The school is comprised of multiple buildings which gives it a 'campus' feel. Why is this important? As evident with the school population. We accept and celebrate diversity in our school. With an educational environment that encourages the students to succeed. The IB and Gold Medallion Programs are available to help students prepare for college. Our school is rich in history being here since 1925. Our school represents the ever changing population of our culture, we are an international school, English as a Second Language is available. Sports, Theater, Music, Band and Science are well represented here at Northtown. Come and check us out, you will be glad that you did. We're the only school in the NKCSD to have a college like campus which is great for getting us in the 'mood' for college like atmosphere. We're also special because we're the only school in the district to have open lunch like Wendy's, Subway, Taco Bell, Nonnie's, Dairy Queen, and Quick Trip, even though the public may hate us at Subway on $2.99 Tuesday we respect the public by not walking through people's yards and not littering. We're also the only school in the district to have a seperate building for our libary which is two stories and we share with the public. Along with the 6 building school which is in the city of north kansas city, nkchs also has open lunch, which no other school has. This means that students are allowed to leave campus to eat lunch at the surrounding restaurants. Quik trip, dairy queen and nana's seem to be pretty popular. I think nkchs is a great school with lots of fun things and neat people.”
