Sumner Academy of Arts & Science Reviews

Sumner was an EXCELLENT school for me. I am currently in college and just breezing right through it and its all thanks to the education I recieved at Sumner. The staff was always very kind to me and helped me in any way they could, while not being too generous or easy on anyone. Every year the graduates are the proudest looking young men and women I have ever seen because this is by NO means an easy school to get through so it really makes them see how great of a task they have accomplished by graduating from such an excellent school. To this day I brag that I am a graduate of Sumner Academy.

Excellent school within an urban setting which offers sound academic, atheletic and extra curicular programs. I defintely disagree with the post dated 8/14/08. Students are challenged and the expectations are always high. Staff support has been excellent. Some draw backs however are the small size of the school and the buildings age, which although historic, requires necessary upgrades.

Sumner Academy offers a rigourous, academic schedule while offering sports, music, debate, forensics, etc for students to develop other skills.

Great School, great teachers and I love the way my two sons are challenged academically and socially. I would not trade the experiences of Sumner for any other school district in the KC metro area.

I am a graduate of Sumner Academy and can say nothing negative about my experience as a student. Sumner set me apart from other students once in college. I was more prepared than my peers for the coursework and level of discipline that it took to get through college succcessfully and with minimal stress. For those who have negative things to say about Sumner, in my experience, it has been students who could not handle the responsibility, or parents who were upset that their child was unable to make it.

Sumner is very tough for students going from no homework to tons of homework. I asked for a tutor and was told there was an after school study hall. This study hall is not tutoring, it simply take the place of a library. There is suppose to be help available, most times help wasn't available for a particular subject matter. The state of Kansas offers free tutoring I later found thru another district. Most teachers don't reply to emails on school loop. Teachers are so busy with other obligations that they have very little time to spend with there students outside of class for extra help. In my opinion Sumner is no different from the other schools in USD 500. I was told great things about Sumner and once there I was very disappointed. It's surprising how many parents send their kids outside of USD 500 to complete their education. I would think twice before sending my child to Sumner.

This is a terrible school. the students leave stressed and totally unprepared for college. Sumner is just the district's bastion of high test scores, nothing more.

The best school in the world! It has a very hard curicculum but they make it so that it is not too hard but so that it pushes you to do your best! The teachers are awesome and are there to help you if you are having trouble

This is the very BEST that you could hope for in KC.

I am a graduate of Sumner, and I can affirm there isn't a better school for your children to attend in USD 500, or with which you as a parent can be involved. The coursework is difficult, but not impossible, and it provided the challenges I needed to grow and discover how much I could accomplish as a student, and a person. Sumner gave me tools that not only helped me succeed in high school, but continue to serve me through my adult life and my journey through graduate school. The excellent teachers there inspired me to become a teacher myself, and I hope to return to teach at Sumner in the future, giving back to the school that has given me so much.

I am a Full International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate at Sumner Academy. I believe that Sumner prepares its students well for the future. Throughout the IB Programme, the students are given a rigorous, college-preparatory curriculum that, indeed, prepares students for the lucubration that is awaiting after graduation. I believe that the teachers will go out of their way in order to help the students. The school can seem monotonous at times, but to stand back and realise that our future is in our hands, makes us persevere. Moreover, I believe that Sumner should start to raise its standards; they have been slipping in the past years. All-in-all, I believe that Sumner is a perfect school to send one's child for a rigorous college-prep curriculum; especially if one has a choice between any other USD 500 school.

Sumner is a great school. I love it here. I know that Sumner will help me out in the near future thats why I am trying my hardest to do everything I can do to better my education. I wouldn't trade Sumner for another school in the world. The teachers are great and I love the emviornment. Since my eoght grade year I have changed a lot and I give that to Sumner as to why I have!

I know that I am not a parent yet. However, I did graduate in 2002 and as a result of my time spent there and what I have accomplished since graduating, I would do everything in my power to assure that Sumner remains the quality institution that it is. Any curriculum, structure, or activity changes that could be usefull to Sumner get caught up in the red tape of public funding through taxes. More important than knowledge, students walk out of those doors prepared to handle the quantity and quality of a college curriculum on a college pace. I was by no means at the top of my class. I am in my 4th year of college sine I left, and it has been my experience that the skills of gleaning and retaining knowledge have set me apart from students of other districts in the metro and those of other states. Proudly and respectfully, ~McKenzie S.

I've just graduated Sumner this last year of 2005. I feel great in college because Sumner has helped me so much, I am greatful that I had the chance to attend such a great school.

I am less than two weeks from graduating from Sumner Academy and it has been nothing but great. I feel that it has prepared me very well for the things I will encounter in the future. Everyone who puts forth the time and effort can go to Sumner with minimal difficulty. I don't feel that Sumner is a school designed for geniuses, but a school there for students that have dedication and need a challenge. Sumner is not for those who don't care about school, or who aren't committed to bettering their education. Overall, I feel that if used to its full potential, Sumner can be the best challenge for any student.

As an graduate of SA I would have nothing but praise for my alma mater. Sumner is what you make of it. For those students who want to learn and are willing to make studies a priority they will succeed. The teachers are the best in the area. They are there because they want to impart their knowledge to those willing to accept the challenge. The curriculum is tough but the children who attend Sumner should expect a challenge. If I still lived in the area I would send my child there in a heartbeat.

Very excellent school. With high standards and classes that prepare it's students for college. While still allowing students to enjoy their overall high school expireance.

I graduated from Sumner in 1994. Granted, it is a wonderful school and prepared me for college. But, eighth graders and seniors do not belong in the same building. It is torture on a 13 year old 'rookie' to be bullied by an 18 year old. Also, Sumner puts a lot of undue pressure on young people. What 14 year old knows what they want to be when they group up? The teachers I had did inspire me to be a teacher myself, though. There are a lot of ups and downs to Sumner. It just depends on your child.

Sumner was an outstanding school for my daughter. The staff was strict but fair. She is very pleased with the level of education she obtained while attending school here. She credits the good grades she is making in college to the education and skills she learned while attending Sumner.

Sumner is way overrated. All the teachers are pompous and think they are above the system. THe only two good teachers are Mr. Hopkins and Mr. Taft. However, there is one courageous man who does teacher there. His name is Bill Leafblad. He is a great teacher and motivator.

Summner Academy is overated in Kansas City. Their are some great teachers at Sumner Academy such as Mr.& Mrs. Parra, Mr. Clark and many others. The only problems I had was that when a child struggles they are too quick to try to 'kick you out'. I believe that it is a privelage to go to Sumner but I don't believe that they prepare the students well enough to succeed especially ones that are entering in the 8th grade. I am glad that they finally decided to put in a Pre-Algebra 1 class for children that struggle as well as a regular Algebra 1 program for those students who succeed in mathmatics but it was a year too late for me.
